Snapchat by Snap Inc., is one of the newer social media apps to take off a mere 6 and a half years ago. As many people know, it is a simple photo-messaging and multimedia mobile application created by former Stanford University students Evan Spiegel, Bobby Murphy, and Reggie Brown. This app, launched in September of 2011, is known for it's ephemeral (short lived) content in the form of photos that last a handful of seconds and stories that stay up for only 24 hours before disappearing. This concept is extremely popular among the younger people today as it is keeps people in the moment, removing the inevitable anxiety that typically follows posting photos on other social media platforms -- "is this the perfect angle? I hope I get at least 10 likes..."
Many of the hottest and most popular celebrities take to using this app to connect with their fans and followers -- one such star being Kylie Jenner of Keeping Up With the Kardashians. This 20 year old was always using the platform to send video updates of her life to her fans throughout the day, making her one of the platform's most influential users. About a year ago, she suddenly stepped out of the spotlight for months due to the preparation of her recently born daughter, Stormi, which she decided to keep under wraps. Now that her pregnancy is no longer a secret, she is back using social media and interacting heavily with her fans.
Snapchat, however, also recently went through some changes in the form of a recent app redesign of which is steadily garnering negative reviews. This skyrocketed when on Wednesday, February 21st, Kylie posted a Tweet on Twitter, another immensely popular social media platform, admitting to not using the app anymore -- which many people connected to the unpopular redesign.
After this Tweet was seen by her 24.5 million followers, The Snapchat parent's shares dropped as much as 7.2%, which is equivalent to a $1.3 billion loss in market value. One Tweet on a social media platform can have that much power. Whether Kylie doesn't use the app anymore is indeed due to the redesign or simply because of the 24/7 job of being a new mother, Wall Street analysts have begun noting drops in Snapchat's usage since the redesign and a sudden jump in negative reviews.
In fact, over 1.2 million people have signed a petition on Change.org for the removal of the redesign. While Snap Inc. believes that the redesign was necessary to expand the platform's user base, they have released a statement on the petition with the announcement of an update to help qualm some of the problems people seemed to have -- including other celebrities like Chrissy Teigen.
